WUWF-88.1 public radio station
offers two trips each year to
foreign countries as part of its
Travel Hound tour series.
It’s hosting a cultural trip to
Costa Rica in May, but only a few
slots are left.
In November, a 15-day, 14-night trip
to China is being offered, and it
includes a three-night cruise on the
Yangtze River, along with tours of
the Great Wall of China, Tiananmen
Square, Beijing, and Chengdu to see
the Giant Panda Breeding Research
Center.
“This is a way to get to meet our
listeners, because we’re on the air,
and we don’t get meet them,’’ said
Kassy Tyler, director of major gifts
and organizer of the trips.
But the trips are also a way to
expand on the radio station’s
mission.
“The educational aspect is part of
our mission to enrich lives,’’ she
said. “Our mission is to develop and
promote music, art and education
through our broadcasts and community
outreach programs.’’
The goal is to broaden the minds and
the world of the people who sign on
for the trips.
“I’ve traveled a lot,’’ Tyler said.
“I’ve learned that the more you
learn about other countries, the
more you learn about your own
country and yourself. It puts things
in perspective. Other countries are
not all Wal-Marts and McDonalds.
People who have not traveled, and
don’t want to, have a myopic view of
the world.”
The China trip is currently priced
at $3,995 per person, leaving from
Los Angeles, and that includes 28
meals, accommodations and tours.
However, the tour operator is
working on a group deal leaving from
Pensacola.
