Can you wear it: Patent Leather

For a polished look, pick patent.

The glossy, girlie material that debuted last fall is shining brightly this spring.
Furla, Miu Miu, Chanel, Francesco Biasia and Be & D are some of the higher-end lines that are presenting patent accessories. Now, the trend, part of the flashback to 1960s and ’80s mod fashions, is resurfacing in many Pensacola Bay Area stores, from the new BT Rouge Boutique (next door to TJ Maxx on Davis Highway.) to Charlotte Russe (Cordova Mall) and Rack Room Shoes (University Mall).

But beware: You’ll look like a laminated loon in head-to-
toe patent.

Follow the advice of Jan Mauldin if you want to look pretty in patent. She’s the marketing director of Rack Room Shoes at company headquarters in Charlotte, N.C.

Q. What are the do’s and don’ts of patent (or faux patent) leather? For example, are there any age restrictions; is it appropriate for work and church; and would you wear it at any time of the day and year?

A. “Once reserved for only special occasions, patent works everywhere. The only possible restriction one might want to consider is the height of the heel. You probably shouldn’t show up in church with a four-inch strappy heel and a platform; this style is more fitting for clubbing. A patent-leather ballet flat or wedge with a little more coverage are more appropriate choices for attending a service.”

Q. Why is patent so popular?

A. “It’s shiny and modern, and new processes have made wearing patent practical and affordable for every day. A true patent is not as durable as the (faux-patent) products now out on the market.”

Q. What colors are the hot for spring and why?

A. “Red is definitely in right now. Pantones Chili Pepper red was picked as (Rack Room’s) color of the year, and it took off. It’s a spirited and bold color that makes a statement and goes with more than you might think. A simple white T-shirt and your favorite jeans get a complete overhaul when paired up with a red patent shoe of any style.”

KEEP THAT HEALTHY GLOW:
Tip: To rid patent leather of fingerprints, wipe it with a soft damp cloth.
